The Engine Equity STEM program is a Virginia Tech, YMCA hosted robotics education program hosted by the YMCA. It is a student-led initiative designed to provide accessible, hands-on STEM learning opportunities to underrepresented and financially disadvantaged children in our community who do not have the income to afford robotics programs hosted by FIRST. Over 10 weeks, the program introduces students to foundational STEM using Arduino microcontrollers and other hobbyist hardware typically out of reach for families facing financial barriers. In the most recent session, students explored topics such as wiring, programming, and mechanics through the process of building their own Robot Car. Through the high teacher-to-student ratio, the camp taught a group of students, individually guiding them through this process, leading to more personalised instruction and mentorship. Through this program, the students have responded positively, spreading STEM engagement in underprivileged families.
